Diabetes is High Blood SugarDiabetes is a serious disease. The simple definition says that diabetes is a disease where an individual's blood sugar levels are above normal. The reason this matters is that most of our food is turned into sugar (glucose) in our bodies so our cells can use it for energy. Our pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that helps the glucose enter our cells so we can use it to power our bodies. When an individual has diabetes, the body either cannot make enough insulin, or cannot use the insulin it produces very well. This causes sugar to build up in your blood, and more importantly, not to enter your cells.
Other complcatios of diabetesDiabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
