Diabetes Care Resources Online

I have found a lot of resources on diabetes online - so many that many of you are wondering why I thought the whole world wide web needed another one. :)

Anyway - I hope to make a sort of central place where individuals can jump start their information search. People are looking for risk factors and symptoms of diabetes, recipes for diabetics, and the latest trends in health care. Of course diabetics are also looking for insurance! I will rant about that in another post.

The Insurance Rate Site Diabetes Section has resources for diabetics. The highlights include Free Diabetic Meter offers and natural supplements that take the edge off of symptoms like cravings, poor circulation, and fatigue.

For insurance information, start searching at Research Insurance.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is High Blood Sugar

Diabetes is a serious disease. The simple definition says that diabetes is a disease where an individual's blood sugar levels are above normal. The reason this matters is that most of our food is turned into sugar (glucose) in our bodies so our cells can use it for energy. Our pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that helps the glucose enter our cells so we can use it to power our bodies. When an individual has diabetes, the body either cannot make enough insulin, or cannot use the insulin it produces very well. This causes sugar to build up in your blood, and more importantly, not to enter your cells.

Other complcatios of diabetes

Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
